A marine engineer is responsible for the maintenance and general operation of a ship's engines. He is expected to lead a team of skilled technical staff to ensure a ship runs safely and efficiently. A marine engineer should be resourceful and capable of improvising under often demanding circumstances.

The chief engineer of the ship is the head of the technical department of the ship. It is his duty to ensure that the engine room machinery works properly for a smooth voyage.

The job demands practical work, and engineers spend their most of the day in boiler suits. Even chief engineers spend about a quarter of their time in practical tasks. If any part of a ship's system fails, it must be dismantled, assessed, repaired, reassembled and put back into operation. Sometimes spare parts have to be manufactured on board.

Approved by The Directorate General of Shipping, Goverment of India.
